I've met a quite a few gatherers in person and have to say I have found them a very likeable bunch and far from miserable. 
I think there are some with an odd sense of humour, but not necessarily anti-social!
Put rats in a cage and they fight. People react to the environment they are in and this may not actually really reflect their real characters. 
There are one or two that I just don't get, but I'm sure they are quite nice. Really. 
Except Chapman. He's a total cock.
