[kj] Your Favourite KJ albums in order (Brendan Quinn)

Dominico C dominicoc at hotmail.com
Wed Jul 18 00:03:02 EDT 2012

1. Pandemonium – Saw them live in ‘94, been a fan for about 3 years at the time, but this was the first time I saw em live. Kind of bumped into Geordie outside, but it took me a minute to realize who it was...At that point, they changed my whole perception to live quality in bands! - Consistent.

2. KJ 1980 – Still one of my favorites too. – Consistent too.

3. Democracy / Extremities – Though, still two of my favorite albums next to Pandemonium. It’s a toss up. I love both. I love Savage Freedom, but also love Money is Not our God, plus rest of the tracks. I can at least listen all the way through! that’s what an album should be, consistent.

4. KJ 2003 – Mainly to listen to ASTEROID!!! and Seeing Red!! – Saw em in 2003! Great show!

5. AD – Still listen to selected tracks – Saw em in 2010, that was a great show, but disappointing that Youth bowed out...

6. WTF – listen occasionally – Consistent.

7. Revelations – listen occasionally - Consistent

8. Fire Dances – listen occasionally - Consistent

9. Chaos for Breakfast / HA! That’s a toss up too – Love the demos and the bread and butter jam / DUB! But, HA was one that I sought over for 10+ years and bought it on vinyl, then on tape... Then finally, they released it on CD!

10. MMXXII – Finally an album with continuity. I like the album, but have to say, it doesn’t stand up to my top picks. But, as far as production, it’s so much better than Hossanas! - Consistent

11. Perverted Pantomime – This one was another release, I was ecstatic to see, because of some rare tracks I never heard before!

12. Hossanas – Listen on occasion, but only select tracks, have to skip others... Just have to tweak the EQ frequently!

13. BTATS – When I was way, way younger, I could stand the “80’s squeaky wave stuff”, but now, well, I sold my tape and CD years ago... But, could stand it over OTG...

14. OTG – I remember years ago, picking this one up, gave it a couple of listens, and became instantly disappointed.... And sold it...

"1. Democracy - this was the one where KJ became a band that I loved as
opposed to a band I'd heard and quite liked. It was the guitar that really
got me Thanks for lending it to me Mike :o)

2. Whats THIS for - timeless classic

3. KJ 1980 - ditto

4. KJ 2003 - a mix of good and less good, but when its good.............

5. Ha!

6. Extremities

7. Absolute Dissent

8. MMXXII

9. Night Time

10. Pandaemonium - I played this to death when I got it, but I don't feel
the need to listen to it now. Apart from Exorcism, which remains jaw
droppingly powerful.

11. BTATS - I so LOATHE that shiny glossy 1980s prodution and was never able
to get past it, until recently - there are some good songs on there

12. OTG - mainly because My love of this Land is one of my favourite songs
(KJ or otherwise) - there are a few other moments too

13. Fire Dances - not bad but nothing stands out for me either

14. Revelations - never liked it. Sorry. I've tried but I just don't get it
- for me it plods when it should grind - what am I missing?

15. Hosannas - awful production, the songs are waaay too long. Jaz' voice is
fucked. I can't listen to it. Wretched."

Oh god, now I have this mental picture of him!!! He does have a slightly different dress sense, but know leg warmers. I am not sure of his walkman playlist but he does still have Love Like Blood as his ring tone. If I am honest I knew Roger well for about 3 years without actually knowing he was Rankin Roger, then he was just Roger who was in and around Bearwood where I live!! He was then not in a band as such and he did coach roller blading for ages and also wrote magazine articles etc. I bumped into him on the High Street and someone joined him and said aren?t you playing on Friday etc. Me being an idiot asked if he was in a band and he said yes The Beat to which I replied you are not Rankin Roger? I did have a period where he knew wifey and I really well ? these days I see him less but he is always pleased to see you ? he is a really nice bloke as is junior.

You should have said!

If I'd have known he had roller blades to keep him happy I would have understood.

Does he have leg warmers and a Sony Walkman on which he listens to Shakattak?

Disc two has the early singles and some sessions and some superb dub and other mixes and the DVD disc has two vids, five TOTP appearances and a live show from 1980.

Well worth the cash.

I rate Atkins right up there with BPF and Dugmore. And, Atkins shined not
only with Exremities, but all the other KJ back catalog. I also like Damage
Manual and Murder Inc! I have a '91 bootleg and the Live "Inside
Extremities" discs. Atkins shines on The Wait and Empire song as well as the
Extremities material.

Respectfully counter-disagree, since I did see them in 1991.

Atkins was a fine addition and certainly better than either Dugmore or
Parsons (sorry Godflesh-lovers) but his schtick only worked on the
Extremities tracks. Anything else and he sounded like a toddler taking it
out on the pots and pans.

The water-on-the-drumhead bit was labored as well.

There seems to be a big divide here between the rubbery finesse of the
Youth/BPF axis vs. the industrial thuggery of Raven/Atkins. Read any recent
review online and you can usually tell with what album the writer started
listening to KJ.

anyone who saw killing joke early in 1991 realised at the time that they

the songwriting has been better on 2012 IMO than on any other recording
since extremities is that down to a combination of the 4 original members

BPF didn't play the festivals in 2010-11 either. I assume he's able to
manage his NYC schedule around a full tour but not these one-off weekend
gigs.

I said it before and I'll say it again: BPF is the missing piece and the
video of Jason Bowld just confims it. Bowld's a dependable timekeeper, i'm
sure, but also a basher with little finesse. I've seen KJ with 5 different
drummers now and the closest anyone's come to BPF is Ben Calvert and even he
was wide of the mark. My GF accompanied me to the Chicago shows in 2010 and
she couldn't give a rip about KJ but she left impressed, commenting "the
drummer was incredible."

Indeed.

Hey Alex,

No doubt you caught up, but just in case, Jason Bowld, is the drummer.
What I have not heard yet is why, had Big Paul, a sick note?
I guess it could be any reason and none of my business, but after the Youth
blog, I think it was, things did not sound happy in camp KJ.
Or I guess he could have had other commitments, just curious though.

Atkins Raven was a hell of a combination for sure. Raven always gave credit
to Atkins even when they didn't see eye to eye.

What Per skrev, pretty much (Pandy & Extremities higher up)

How the flip did no one else come up with Killing Joke as the best album?
What do I pay you guys for?!

I'll have a go to, haven't done it before, too busy lurking...

KJ (1980)

BTATS
Night Time
MMXII
KJ (2003)
WTF
Pandemonium
Absolute Dissent
Revelations
Fire Dances
Democracy
OTG

Extremities
Hosannas

(No Ha!, as it's Live..., but I'd put Chaos for Breakfast at #1)

off the cuff..............

Wretched.

An album featuring all the Malicious Damage stuff compiled on Chaos for
Breakfast would have featured inthe top 2 or 3

Peter
