[kj] Jaz's Hilarious Rant on Hypocrite Rock Stars in Politics

Got that wrong...."A dozen press agents working overtime, can do terrible things to the human spirit". Cecil B DeMille himself says it in the film. Swanson ends up a victim of her own hype. It becomes her reality. Who knows what people like Bono sound like to statesmen and presidents?
What would we sound like?

"FOUR COPYRIGHTERS WORKING OVERTIME CAN DO TERRIBLE THINGS TO THE HUMAN SOUL..."

Why do pop stars think they can handle and make a valid contribution to global politics? Ask Gloria Swanson?
A bit too much time in front of adoring, hysterical fans...

Regarding Midnight Oil, "Best of Both Worlds," "Read About It" and "The Power and the Passion" are all fucking excellent.

Tonic for the Troops is a reasonable album of its time, and I thought the singles of that era (Mondays in particular) were pretty good. (Though you can tell that he was taking himself way too seriously even then... like most vocalists, admittedly!) Midnight Oil. My girlfriend at the time bought Diesel and Dust, and it was ok. Musically mainstream, of course, but ok. At least it was a lot better than most of her musical taste! Sparked by that, I bought their supposedly punkiest, supposedly seminal, supposedly non-mainstream album, and was underwhelmed. As for their politics, I don't know enough to comment. I guess they (or at least Garrett) get some respect from me for taking politics seriously enough to get into it full time, rather than the usual rock star approach of adopting the current right-on cause for as long as it's in the news, but mostly getting on with the serious business of drugs and sex (with a bit of time for rock-n-roll). I think the idea that rock stars of any flavour (including Jaz) have a special insight into politics / current affairs is laughable (up there with the idea that celebs will make good actors / singers / whatever). Their opinions are no more (or less) valuable than yours or mine, though *likely* to be less well-informed as they already have a full-time passion that hopefully soaks up most of their brain-time. But people pay special attention to them just because they like their music - true for a lot of Gatherers in regard to the Joke, I'd guess. Jamie

I was living in Australia at the time - guy's a tosser as far as I'm
concerned. I had a similar Peter Garret rant to Jaz's at about the same
time. And I have always thought Midnight Oil suck shit as a band...realise
not everyone here agrees of course (ditto with U2).

But I'm sure no one's got poor enough taste to stand up for the Boomtown
Shits.

Musically Killing Joke are totally beyond the reach of bands like U2 and the
Shittown Rats.

Geldof had the gall to come down to NZ a few years back and berate us for
not giving enough money to charity - the govt that is - when on an
individual level we're some of the most generous people in the world. As are
Americans & British I might add.
