In the recent book 'Goth Chic: A Connoisseur's Guide to Dark Culture' by Gavin Baddeley, after featuring Joy Division, Theatre of Hate, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cure, UK Decay, Sex Gang Children, Blood and Roses, etc, there is the following snippet:
"The notoriously volatile Killing Joke became as legendary for their offstage eccentricities as for their potent musical assault. Most notoriously, singer/keyboardist Jaz Coleman's obsession with the occult led him to flee to Iceland in 1982 - convinced it was the only safe haven from the imminent apocalypse, and that the six letters in each part of the US president's name, Ronald Wilson Reagan, signified 666, 'the number of the Beast'."
"Killing Joke are now hailed as forerunners of modern industrial music with their menacing blend of black humour and musical mania. While none of these bands was 'Goth' per se, all reflected the exotic gloominess of the UK underground, that would culminate in the birth of the Goth scene."
