[kj] down by the river

I'd be more than happy to approach Killing Joke product as Marillion do, with gigs and product funded by the fans. My brother is a massive Marillion fan, and he's been with their business model from start, and it seems to work very well indeed. Unfortunately, it does require a lot of organisation and effort, things Marillion seem to have in spades. I'm not convinced KJ can do that though. Whereas Marillion have a stable line-up, a permanent organisation and centres of activity, the Joke try and get it together when they have something to do, which is far too haphazard for such schemes. I'd love to see Killing Joke run on the same basis as Marillion, but I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Jim.

I think it's a good idea, esp for smaller acts with smaller sales.
Instead of a band shelling out up front & then trying to recoup & make a profit (esp in an age of file sharing & downloads) you promote & raise funds for the project before you start.
But what's really good about this (and I have 'GoP' firmly in mind) is that the artist doesn't receive a penny until the target amount is reached, if the target amount isn't reached within the specified time period) everyone who has pledged is refunded in full.

I suppose the simplest way of looking at it is to think of it as sponsoring an album or funding church roof repairs or something.
If you don't reach the target amount, the roof doesn't get repaired.
