[kj] Martin Atkins quote from SXSW todayish: KJ

I think we've got at least 2 different meanings for "mixtapes" floating
around.  When I first heard "mixtapes"(or cds) it was only dj or similar mixes.
Only. Compilations ('mix'tapes, ughh!) were below that.

And I'd get my mixtapes from friends, djs, and some stores.
Compilations were a step below that, which is why it pissed me off hugely when I
first went looking for a (mass-produced) "mixtape" which was neither a mix
nor on even on good quality tape!

I think some Brits and Euros may have a slightly different semantic for
mixtapes.
e.g. I was picking up 'DJ' mixtapes, not necessarily hip-hop, from places like
choci's tunes and parties in the late 80s early 90s.
It was very synonymous with rave culture.

That's my point, Sade. Mixtapes used to be just that -- homemade cassette
compilations. In the last several years, however, the term "mixtape" now refers
to a promotional tool for hip hop record labels. I'm not defending it, I'm just
sayin'.

I was listening to mixtapes back in the 80s and they had nothing to do with
hiphop (altough hiphop was a genre also mixed since back then).
