[kj] OT: Recording software

I use Sound Forge Pro and Acid Pro for recording, multi-tracking and
editing. I'm finding lately that Sound Forge Pro is more than just an audio
editor. I also use FL Studio to build percussion / beats, and do a lot of
sequencing with it. I also have hardware, Mackie 6 channel mixer, Roland
SH-201, Korg Triton Extreme, KP3, Akai drum machine, and play an electric
Ibanez, with a couple of stomp boxes. Everything is fed into the mixer, and
then to the hard drive. Most of the hardware had been collected over the
years though.

12-13 years ago I started bare bones, but things changed and evolved where
even the hardware synths were becoming more affordable, which I bought my
first Korg. That Korg was cool.

I tried Sonar, but I was encountering Latency and plugin issues about 2
years ago... I then switched back to Acid Pro for multi-tracking. I also
have a plethora of VST plugins, mostly freebies.

It depends on what I'm doing. And things have changed over the years; I also
lost a lot of kit when I moved to the States.
As I always need something organic in the mix, I use a Mackie 1624 mixer.
Software wise, basics like Soundforge for Wav editing. Fruiytloops for loop
generation. Cubase. I used Logic for a bit, and would still recommend it.
I have a Delta 1010 soundcard, and will never buy anything from M Audio
again, WAY to many MS conflicts.
Although I record to hard drive, the main mix will always be thru the
Mackie. I would love Pro Tools, but can never find a decent rip ;)
I always record live, i.e. hands on the mixer.
These days I do mainly field recording and loop generation. Guitar =
Epiphone LP copy..nice action, low budget :) I was once the proud owner of
numerous guitars, strat, les paul, hofner (acoustic) among others.
After losing all my Roland kit (101, 303, 909 etc.) I invested in a JP8000,
and use sample programs for drums now.
I would use Ableton for live. Good when using 'raw' cuts, and mixing on the
fly, less processor issues.
Truthfully I am more of a sound freak, than software freak, and will gladly
mess around with anything I can get my hands on. I used to do a lot of
circuit bending, particularly with pedals. Then it got trendy and naff.
Rebirth and reactor occassionally get used.

Gatherers,

I'm looking into different kinds of recording software and I'm not sure what
to get. What do the rest of you guys use and why?

Cheers,

Adam

I would only use Ableton for live performance, using 'raw cuts'. Not
practical for recording, as my sound sources come from numerous places...
Not a fan of Cakewalk, though. My mixdowns are still analog.

Ableton Live . . . .

I must admit I have never really got along with that program, I guess I am a
Cakewalk/Sonar type of guy

Ive had a Delta 1010 for years, never had any conflict issues with it. I use
a M-Audio Midisport too and its also rock solid.
My mixer is a yamaha 01V, through Alesis monitors (total shit, cant wait to
change them, Mackie or KRK's next time). I used to work for yamaha, so got
quite a bit of yammy stuff, mixer, sampler, motif rack xs, rm1x loop
sequencer.
As for software, I mainly use Cubase and Reason, cos Ive used them both for
years and know them inside out. Wavelab for editing and mastering.
Ive recently (last few weeks) started getting into Ableton, in the hope that
it will get me out of the creative rut Ive been in for ages. Never really
used it before, but Im quite liking it at the moment. The deeper I go into
it, the more features I keep finding where I think "why doesnt cubase do
this?".
