Because CARS grow from concrete.  Every proper American home has and should have a bed of concrete with a car rising above it.  That and Apple Pie, that's it. Take that to the bank; we're home now.

Then again, I just spent the last week eating some of the absolutely sweetest, most delicious tomatoes from my dad's garden, so what's that say?

It's something that's bothered me since living in the States, how a person's garden has to adhere to a 'code'.
Lots of people really do seem to prefer concrete.
