Brian,

I did not check my mail and only found out about your dad's passing now. My sincere condolences, and reading your story really upset me. My grandma sustained open heart surgery to replace her mitral valve and get a pacemaker almost 6 years ago and had to spend 2 weeks at the ICU and almost one month at the hospital after that. She is better than ever, even though she had to learn how take things slower, one page at a time.

I am so surprised and shocked to read that your dad was discharged so soon!!! I am so sorry, so sad and so mad--with the proper care your dad would be alive, I am sure about that.

Really, my heart goes out to you and your family, Brian. Feel free to vent, I am sure I am not the only one here who can speak for a family member being hospitalized for a major surgery in the past.

Thanks for all the mails of sympathy.

A rant:

My dad (88) was in and out of hospital 3times over the last few weeks because as soon as was discharged he went straightback in. He’d had a heart attack just before Christmas which he survived which resulted in him having a pacemaker fitted.

At his last hospital stay: I went round to visit him lastFriday at around 3:30pm and as I walked into the ward I saw a forlorn figureslumped in a chair in the waiting room in front of a TV with kids TV onsurrounded by his bags and belongings – my dad. They were discharging him again!!!!! It was just a case of waiting from his medication to arrive from thehospital pharmacy and then they’d get an ambulance to take him home. He’d beenthere since around 1pm and they had not contacted me or my sister to let usknow, they had absolutely no idea of his circumstances at home, whether he hadfood in or even if he had a key to get in.

I sat with him until 6:30 when his medication finally arrived and bywhich time he was getting very desperate and just wanted to lie down. There isno way I could put him through another couple of hours sat in that chair waiting for an ambulance to take him home so Igrabbed a wheel chair and pushed him through the maze of the hospital and to mycar on the car park. It was a massive struggle as it was cold windy and rainy but Ieventually managed to get him home and sat in his favorite chair. I was justabout to getting the heating sorted out when he started to complain of chestpains – his heart was giving in again. Long story short – called 999 and withina hour of arriving back home he was back in the hospital battling for his life, which he eventuallylost around 12 hours later.

In off the reord chats with staff they tell me that the pressures on the helath service and to free up space is even greater with the cuts. So if I hear another politician use the phrase "We're all in this together", when certain sections of commerce are earnig huge profits again, I'll explode.

Do I sound bitter...yes, good.

Rant over

Brian.
