[kj] Triggers at Yawn...

Working late at a bank in 2007, a trader walked past my desk and recognised
Night Time, which I was playing...that was unexpected.

Met a girl in Sydney who said Killing Joke were the first gig she ever went
to.

Guy who worked in a cafe I used to go to said he knows a girl who went out
with Jaz Coleman.

And my little brother *reckons* he met a couple who lived next door to Jaz
and inherited his cat =)

I've burst lots of Nirvana fans' bubbles with Eighties, they ALWAYS say the
same thing: Nirvana's version of the riff sounds better anyway. Whatever.

PS: This from an obscure little booklet on Soundgarden, circa 96 (it's a bit
flowery):

They loved the unpredictable, twisted R&B onslaught of The Stooges and MC5;
the outrageous, Machiavellian power of Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath; the
soul wrenching doom-rock of Killing Joke; and the aggressive, adrenalized
punk of The Dead Boys and Richard Hell & the Voivods.

I usually get that "I don't know what they sound like but the name is one I
have heard when people are generally referring to an obscure early 80's band
that influenced the music I like" empty look and followed by the "I hope I
don't have to elaborate, so please think I follow you and now go on" nod.

Here in the States -- even here in ever hip NYC -- whenever I invoke Killing
Joke as "my favorite band," most people either stare at me blankly or cite
"Eighties."

That all said, most people are stupid.

Try coming to the US--the Joke are pretty underground here. "Joke who?
Killing what? Oh, you mean Killing Joe?"
For some reason bands like Joy Division and even Gang of Four are much
better remembered.

That is so pathetic not really worth commenting on but I will. If someone
slagged off Killing Joke I would just feel sorry for their lack of musical
insight, but wow u must really love those arseholes. I am entitled to say
exactly what I want & I will say it again. For me Big Country were utter
shit! Number one albums means nothing to me, so I guess we are very
different people. In fact I think Killing Joke have become too accessible
with this LP. More underground the better. And I don't like K Bushes music
either. So stuff it up yer haggis!

The Fungus Moth.

Fuck off you ignorant prick!

If anyone else is mean about Big Country I'll shove a bagpipe so far up
their arse they'll be able to play it themselves.

They had a number one album, worked with Kate Bush and shared a stage with
KJ. At a time when it was all synths and haircuts they wrote real music
about working-class themes and played it on real instruments.

Plus two of them were English.

Don't speak ill of the dead muthafucka. How would you like it if you were on
another list and every time KJ were mentioned someone said how shit they
were and what a cunt Raven was?

Name: Peter Moltesen

Model: 1964 - 2 door, 3 litre V8

Special power: an ability to lose my temper with inanimate objects

Best film(s) you saw last year (not necessarily released last year):

Best TV show(s)/series you watched last year: Fresh Blood, Never Mind the
Buzzcocks, Mock the Week, The Mighty Boosh (I'm a latecomer to this),
Coronation Street,

Best album(s) & single(s): last year was very good for music, for starters:

KJ - Absolute Dissent,

Various -Leader of the Starry Skies (The Tim Smith songbook),

Bardo Pond - Bardo Pond

White Hills - pretty much everything they released

GNOD - ditto

Tristeza - Paisajes

Various - In Search of Hawkwind

Mugstar - Sun, Broken

Hawkwind - Blood of the Earth. Far better than anything they've done in at
least the last 25 years

Sun Araw - On Patrol

Magic Lantern - Platoon

Best book(s) you've read:

Electric Eden - Rob Young

Best gig(s):

Hawkwind.

Wooden Shjips

White Hills

GNOD

Best stand-up (gigs or TV, DVD etc): I really liked Frankie Boyle until I
saw 'Tramadol Nights' which was so unbelievably shit & unfunny,

Tim Vine makes me laugh too, and Bill Bailey

Worst TV show(s)/series: Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights, apart from that
theres the endless "Celebrity" / reality / cookery / property porn tv that
passes for entertainment these days - do we REALLY need X Factor on both
Saturday and Sunday evenings ? Well - do we ???

Best Film - not seen many films this year, but Toy Story 3 gets Jack's vote

Any other highlights/low-points:

High - watching my little boy, Jack, grow up

Watching the Sun set in the Florida Keys

Going to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice again

Snow at Christmas and being able to take Jack sledging in Sutton Park

Low - the continued ill health of my dad

the continued ill health of Cardiacs' Tim Smith

The death of Ronnie James Dio

Nick Clegg

How going to gigs is becoming almost prohibitively expensive these days

Ditto going to the pub

The steady decline of the record shop. There is no longer an independent
record shop in Birmingham City Centre. Not a single solitary one.

If you had to live your life by a single motto, what would that be?
Bleeding Head good, Healed Head bad

Best Film - not seen many films this year, but Toy Story 3 gets Jack's vote

Twitter or Facebook? Facebook

Hero of 2010: Julian Assange, Lemmy

Zero of 2010:

Jordan, or whatever her name is

Nick Clegg

The Tea Party

Any resolutions for this year: no

What were your childhood ambitions? Have you managed to fulfil any or all of
them?

Spitfire Pilot ? no

Astronaut ?? nope

Long Distance Lorry Driver ? no

That's a 'no' on all 3 counts, then
