[kj] OT: The Norwegian killer's manifesto (in brief)

I like the perspective on how the writer alludes to intellect. How he contructs his document because, of course, he could not be anything less than highly intelligent and erudite enough to construct a super-intelligent critique.

I dont need to read it but I'll have a go. I spent far too much time close to a raving narcissist with enough intelligene to carry his beliefs off. That and the drugs and the booze helped him of course. He was great company too! Killing Joke fan you know?

You see this all the time with the autistic. For some, the edge of their noses is the end of the universe. They are incapable of understanding that there are alternatives to their ideas and beliefs and if they are aware of them, they cannot engage or relate to them. I hate to say this but this looney has a lot of traits I find familiar. Lives with his mother, no history of sexual relationships, super-well focused, etc etc... The length of the document sounds familiar too. Scary thing is he will probably not prove to be on the spectrum. Just a grade A bastard madman with total belief in himself forever. Shipman etc.

"There is no real insight into why he felt his actions on the 23rd would benefit his cause". Nice one Mr. Fitzpatrick. Now what do you need that stuff for??????

That’s pretty much on the money, I skim-read the manifesto for an hour or so, the impression I was left with was amazement that anyone would care to go over the document in all its detail, he blathers on about inane and then shocking topics without changing gear…why he chose .doc vs .pdf, then pages and pages about the different actions required to achieve various ‘Knights Templar’ medals aka earning money for the cause, killing x amount of traitors, using weapons of mass destruction. And then there’s the dum-dum bullets, the nicotine poison bullets…and every sort of WMD. There is something in there about justifying taking innocent lives…according to him, killing 100 people now is acceptable as it will save thousands of lives down the track. Somehow.

While psychopathy isn’t officially diagnosable by lay-people (there’s a specific test which uses multiple data points and their inter-relationships, from memory), the one that stands out is complete lack of remorse / empathy / conscience. As evidenced by his look of smug self-satisfaction in photos, and his comments. Most people couldn’t bear to live with themselves after what he’s done.

‘Without Conscience’ by Richard Hare is a good read, he’s regarded as one of or the main authority on psychopathy, think he developed the test etc. (Read it a few years ago)

http://www.amazon.com/Without-Conscience-Disturbing-World-Psychopaths/dp/1572304510/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311806863&sr=8-1

Whether nature or nurture underlies their aberration is still uncertain; they are almost impossible to treat, according to Hare, because they are convinced that they have no psychological or emotional problems.

For anyone interested, but with no time to read it, this is a Comment by an Economist reader who read the Norwegian nutter's manifesto. From the Economist website :

You can read the manifesto here:
http://www.kevinislaughter.com/wp-content/uploads/2083+-+A+European+Decl...
...if you have the stomach for it......
I've finished reading it about an hour ago.....and it's a slog.
The guy is an obsessive (the maifesto is over 1500 pages) narcissistic (lengthy writings on steroids, fitness, diet, social standing amongst friends), sociopath (well apart from murdering 90 people in line with his personal ideology, read the stepmother comment) with delusions of grandeur..(not only The Justiciar Knight Commander for Knights Templar Europe...BUT...A Leader of the National and pan-European Patriotic Resistance Movement, no less)
He informs us that his favourite cologne is 'Egoiste' (unsurprisingly?)
He wouldn't be too upset if his stepmother (of whom he is quite fond) should be executed as a traitor for working in the Norwegian Immigration Dept.
His most treasured possession is his Breitling watch (I think I'll take mine off for now)
He takes steroids and details his fitness regime and diet
He is a fan of the Pope, Geert Wilders, Putin, and Radovan Karadzic.
He considers himself the most thoughtful, social, and well adjusted member of his social circle and includes critiques of friends and associates.
The manifesto is rather unstructured containing (among many other things)
A diary
Puns and humour
Detailed planning
Arms purchases
Bomb recipes
Cover stories
Childhood anecdotes
A personal and professional CV
Glowing assessments of his attributes and earning capacity.
Assessments of his personal sacrifices in pursuing his goal.
The beginning of the manifesto, stating the intellectual foundation of his beliefs, itself is detailed, relatively coherent, and obviously well researched (albeit from a singular perspective) and tries hard to emulate an academic or scholarly tract.....it fails though...its a simple polemic, nothing more...and waaaaay too long to be an interesting polemic.
The two glaring faults?
Well apart from the common mistake of most polemicists to cast an uncritical eye over writings and reference material that supports his own perspective he falls for the same mistake that was evident during the Cold War from both sides.
He considers there to be a (yes I hate to say it) conspiracy of Islamic Imperialism aided and abetted by a Marxist/Politically Correct/Liberal elite.
Just like there was no monolithic international communist conspiracy nor a western imperialist version...neither is the a Muslim conspiracy to enslave the west. Regardless of whether one feels there is too much or too little immigration, an organised conspiracy it is not.
Why the Western/Marxist/liberal/intellectual elite, whom he considers pursue a permissive, individualist, anti-traditional society at the expanse of conservative christian family values, would opt to aid and abet the ultra-conservative, pious, and intolerant Islamic empire he envisages...is never addressed.
There is no real insight into why he felt his actions on the 23rd would benefit his cause.
I suppose that is asking for too much introspection and compos menti than Breivik could muster
