There were a couple of ridiculously huge and great record shops in San Francisco (and Berkely): Amoeba Records and
Rasputin Records. Probably the best record shops I've been to in 46 years.

Back in  the days the best source in the states were fanzines like Flipside, Ripper,Touch & Go, MR&R (especially the scene reports) and countless others. MR&R on KPFK radio in 1982 was so much better than Rodney on the Roq, for they played all world punk rock which opened many doors for me about bands in the punk community.  With the states there was so much going on that I think MR&R was the best at one time and then it got so lame political that it lost it's insight of what it really was about. Which was scene reports across the world. I don't even bother to pick it up anymore and just glance through it quickly for it is all crap!
 
Then the DIY record stores of LA to find these jems are all but gone... Second Time Around, Aaron's Record, Vinyl Fetish, Rhino Records, were my main ones as a kid. Now the only thing on Melrose left punk rock record wise is "Headline Records", which the owner John who is from France is an all around great guy, and it is great to see him out there still selling the records he loves. It is sad for all these Mom & Pop record stores have falled to the wayside. There are some still left... but not many. The internet has opend new doors for music and knowledge, and it is so much easy to search the net than by a local zine at times. But I agree The Gathering is a great source of infromation because we all have vary tastes in music and beyond.

I read the mainstream UK music press (Sounds every week; NME & Melody Maker if they had something interesting on the cover) which at least told me what gigs were coming up & what records were being released.  I bought loads of fanzines at gigs, but they were always months out of date (though often quite interesting).
 
So the Gathering wins.

Question to Gatherers:
how much of your music-knowledge/product needs that you used to satisfy at your local record shop do you now turn here to the Gathering (and Gatherers' associated websites) for?
