I've heard about that. Believe I read it in Kris Needs' book ("Needs Must"). Worth a read.
In terms of drugs, I believe it's been stated that the band as a collective were quite fond of cocaine circa FIRE DANCES (which Big Paul Ferguson suggested was the reason the final mix initially sounded a bit treble-heavy).

it's funny how in the history of killing joke  you rarely, if ever, hear the tale of Youths trip to la la land. 
Iceland, yes, maggots, yes, but never Youths troubles at that time.


Maybe there's nothing to tell but the story I heard (& this is probably totally untrue) was something like he drew out all his money, walked into town in his underwear & set fire to it.
