Pete's funny in much the same way that I am periodically elected Pope, and 'spot on' is a bit of a stretch too.
 
As for why people bother responding, I imagine it's probably frustration. His sole purpose here is to piss people off, and after a few years of this you start to wonder why he doesn't find someone else to annoy. Then there's the optimism- maybe one day he'll be interested in discussing, say, Killing Joke, for example. Followed inevitably by disappointment, naturally.
 
The chatter on the gathering is alternately interesting, informative, friendly and hysterically funny, none of which accurately describes Pete. It's got along quite well without a wind-up merchant; you can't blame people for wondering why it has to have one now.
