[kj] So new album..where does it stand

It is wthout doubt a fine record and has some moments that get close to the original feel.
Although there's no tribal drumming, BPF is innovative and the patterns are interesting. Ceratainly he's not the quickest or heaviest drummer but he is BPF and in my mind brings something that makes a difference. He is BPF afterall, say no more.

The Great Cull is going to knacker all of us when we hear it live-thank God!

The Raven King reminds me a bit of the Chameleons a bit - but it cetainly gets to you.

I like it all- it comes togther as whole really well and it is a pleasure to hear Jaz sing again.

An excellent last hurrah?

Cheers,
Peter

Honour the Fire is definitely a contender for?a bit of filler. Not a terrible
song though. Also there's Depthcharge, which is good but reminds me of Another
Bloody Election (a song I'd rather not be reminded of).

The album, as a whole, is really great. It sounds cohesive and deliberate, in
direct contrast to Hosannas which sounds exactly like a bunch of jam sessions
that got pieced together?by some poor bastard of an engineer. The Great Cull,
whilst being one of the heavier tracks on the album, wouldn't sound out of place
at all on Night Time (if you use your imagination a little bit). It's got that
Tabazan/Europe vibe to it. A?few of the songs that we heard seperately and
seemed a little lacklustre make a lot more sense in the context of the album,
Fresh?Fever being the?best example of that. Here Comes the Singularity is
another awesome number and probably the closest the album comes to the "classic
sound".

What's weird to me is that?while several songs on the album?do sound a little
like classic KJ, none of them?really sound like?classic Youth-era KJ. Weird.

I like "Depthcharge," but it did seem a bit reminiscent of, say, "Asteroid." Not
a bad thing, but no ground broken.
Here's a bold thread. Least favorite song on new album?

I'll say "Honour the Fire."

I agree. HTF is pretty generic sounding rawk to me. Instrumentally, it sounds like an out-take off Van Halen's "Balance" album.

Otherwise, this album is more or less better than I really thought it'd be even after hearing some of the tracks over the last couple months. It comes together as a coherent album a lot better than I thought it would considering the different styles. I still get a sense there's at least three distinct periods over the past 18 months these songs can ber grouped into and not just stylistically, but a general "feel" in the music. For instance, "Fresh Fever" has a sharp, live in the studio feel to it where the listener can almost feel the newness of the band playing together again fresh off the reunion tour while HTF and Singularity notably feel a bit too labored over and sterile in comparison, something a band suffering from being cooped up in a studio too long would produce.

But really, I am totally happy that not only did this lineup actually stick together to release a new album, but produced a record that I'd put up in the top 3 or 4 best albums they've ever released. I really hope they play at least 2/3rds of the material live this tour.

T.B.

Absolutely great suggestion! Irony of ironies thatthat?was the one project that
wasn't leaked.

?
?
Any chance of Gems being leaked , at least this way those that have been ripped
off can get something back.

The album is going to be up on torrents anyway so the casual music fan will
always get it.
The way it was leaked was very much a case of "you have to be in the know". A
random search via torrent sites showed nothing for weeks- I know cos I tried.

As for Gems, it does exist! It materialised in as much as it was recorded and
mastered. People were charged for something that was never delivered.
The fact that it's not all that good doesn't come into it.

Consider this one all Pete! The intention of everyone is to have a listen prior
to release and then buy it.

Enjoy your travels. All power to you for talking the leap that so many of us are
fearful of!
