Good post Oliver.

 

The Opry has been essential in modern music and without it we may not have
reaped the effects of american music's influence on world wide human
culture.

 

Not to put a damper (pun intended) on the opry love fest as surely Some of
the greatest music in the world has come through the Opry, Bill Monroe,
Patsy Cline.

But remember Hank Williams was shunned by the Opry, so was Elvis. 

 

BUT Also what the Opry has done is bring a designed pop veneer to coat the
rural folk music which in turn gave rise to rural music rebellions against
The Opry's strict commercial presentations. The most important of these
rebellions Is Rockabilly, which gave Americans something to open their ears,
hearts and souls (Just as punk did in the 70's) amidst the boredom that had
become the commercial music of the south.

 

Now may we all worship the Opry to the point of barf and boredom and new
music rebellions come in it's wake.

I was born in Nashville (like Bettie Page - hah!) and even though "the Grand
Ole Opry" the media speaks of lately is actually the relocated Opry that was
transferred into Nashville's "Opryland" amusement park from its original
downtown Nashville digs -- still -- if you are a fan of rock and roll,
rockabilly, bluegrass, country, etc., you should care about this.

 

(The original/"real" Grand Ole Opry is still downtown in a huge red brick
building, commemorated with a placque. But it moved to where it is now, at
Opryland.)

 

The US South invented rock 'n roll. Never forget that.

 

And a lot of that came from Tennessee. The "golden quartet" of Memphis was
Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, from Jackson, TN. Roy
Orbison also went to TN to record his seminal stuff.

Oh, yeah, and NOLA, another hub of great American culture/music, is also
under threat. Is it because it's "the SOUTH" that no one gives it immediate
