I think everyone's missing the point (or just having a damn good humourous
stab at djs). Just like nobody ever bought a record to watch it spin (not
even a Killing Joke album), nobody ever goes to a club to watch the dj.
Ever. 

Watching him has nothing to do with what he does to the place. Just like no
one ever turned on the radio (in its early years) to watch the radio but
instead to let the story being told take you to an awesome place (think 'War
Of The Worlds'). Also, no one ever went to an ancient storyteller just to
watch him, but instead to trip out on his magickal storytelling talents that
can take you to 'a much better place.' Only with a quality-dj/club you do
the same for $20 + 2drink.minimum. 
 

And yes, there is something magickal-squared to an awesome live performance
that makes it better, IMO, than any dj gig and is why I will always prefer
live gigs, but still, a good DJ who can really "carry a room" (and for, say,
4hrs. vs. a 90min. gig) is very much worth paying for also.

Regardless if one's a fan of the music or not, the fact remains that a d.j.
on a stage is not much to *watch*. It kinda begins and ends there, as far as
I'm concerned,.

Fair go, DJ culture did get somewhat out of control during the 90s, but I
have been to many an 'event' where the main attraction is the DJ. Also been
to many events where you know that the DJ is 'somewhere' around ;)
I am a technohead, and the witnessing of producers like Jeff Mills have been
some of the best experiences of my life :)

..i like seeing bands! not some self important noddy twiddling knobs
grooving away to himself behind a desk with big ears (headphones). 

 

overly critical and simplistic, but i've never gone to a club to see a dj
'play' and dont intend to - thats for other people. when i go out to see
live music i look fwd to one or two opening bands before the main band, its
just more kosher... =)
