Wow, I thought my old man took the cake at 3 packs a day. Never drank water either, lived on coffee & cigarettes. And I’ve been a health and sports freak my whole life, go figure.

My dad smoked 4 packs (yes, 4 packs--80 cigarettes, or fags in the UK) a day from about age 14. He was constantly coughing, loudly, spitting up phlem, even at night during which he'd frequently wake up. He used to light up even before
getting out of bed in the morning. He'd smoke during meals, sometimes even lighting 2 at a time. He would burn holes in his pants. The house always smelled like an ashtray; riding in the car w/him was horrible unless the windows
were open. He did manage to quit for a week or two during middle age--he couldn't believe how much the house smelled (and we had yellow curtains that were formally white). He died at age 68 The coroner didn't need to do an
autopsy--they just told me it was a heart attack due to smoking.

So the withdrawal symptoms from nicotine don't play a part in exacerbating a schizophrenic's condition?
Did they use any non-smokers as a control?
If nicotine helps, why not prescribe just nicotine, instead of actual cigarettes?
It's long been known that the lithium fix obtained from smoking cigarettes helps people with bi-polar disorders. As well as dopamine released from pot smoking.

Patients who cannot obtain their own supply of cigarettes should be provided the means to acquire them so that they will not resort to prostitution, trafficking, assault, and similar disruptive behaviors.
