As a kid I had a bitch of a time learning to say the name "Worcestershire Sauce." I tried and tried saying it as I'm looking at the frikkin' bottle and wondering howin the phuc!** they get that Wuerstur'sheer sauce" from that word.  Mind, I had just learned to read spanish (where everything's pronounced just as it's written) and jsut before english and so I'm 5 y.o. trying to read english phonetically. MyBad.

**but don't take my word for it, no.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wlJmOBxb-E

And on the sports tv news yesterday, they interviewed a baseball player who just moved to Boston from California--they showed him the words "Worcester" and "Gloucester", and asked him to read them, and he couln't pronounce either correctly!

Yes, England is an old and classy place! I live in Massachusetts, and you'd be surprised how many cities/towns are named after UK ones (we have an Easthampton, Westhampton, Southampton--all small--and Northampton--hip college town).

>From Wiki:

The name Shepherds Bush is thought to have originated from the use of the common land here as a resting point for shepherds on their way to Smithfield Market in the City of London.[1] An alternative theory is that it could have been named after someone in the area, because in 1635 the area was recorded as "Sheppards Bush Green".

London is a wee bit older than US cities ;-), hence many of the curious names for areas/regions. As for venue names, most are old
music halls or theatres built between the late 1800s and 1930s (Brixton Academy was built in 1929 and used to be called the
Astoria, Kentish Town Forum was built in 1934. Shepherds Bush Empire was built in 1903 and Charlie Chaplin once performed there.) Why 'Forum', 'Astoria' and 'Empire' etc were so popular I don't know,  a trend of the times I guess, possibly because they wanted
something that sounded grand and classy?

As you were.

One thing I never understood about the UK--why do all the clubs/concert halls or whatever have such strange names? Forums, Academies, and what the hell is Shephard's Bush? Why not sheep-herder's vagina?
