Yes, I think you're on the right track. There is of course a wide range of "human nature" behaviors, very little of them due purely to genes, and much of thems based on upbringing/environment/social norms/prenatal condidtions, etc.

Maybe not as some wield that argument, but, that all said, self-preservation/survival, empathy, sympathy, love, affection, cooperation/collective orientation (cuz we're pack animals), the individual/collective physiological responses to both good deeds and bad events are all part of 'human nature.'
Now, it's how those things get acted out that has alot to do with people's upbringing, and it's that 'acting out' that people use to slam the 'human nature' angle, and keeps people from looking even further and into individual's/collective "source code" (upbringing or lack of).

Below is probably the most often repeated reason for why communism "would never work". I challenge you ask most biologists what really IS human nature. Very little human behaviour can be attributed to "human nature" (ie., genes). How else do you explain, for example, hugely different behaviours in different societies (matriarchal ones, for example), enormously varied behavior between individuals (e.g., most of us have never hurt an ant, but Bush/Chaney/Obama etc have killed millions), and again huge differences in the behviour of even the SAME human in different situations (many of us don't even realize what me might do in the case of a disaster, for example--jumping in a river to save drowning people, etc).
I don't buy the 'Human Nature' argument at all!
