Given I had not seen them in many years, I will be the wide-eyed newbie here and
say it was a phenomenal show. Hoewver, I see the minor criticisms here as legit
and well reasoned. I do agree with that blog that some in the audience seemed
ho-hum.
And I think if the band seemed affected at all, no doubt Youth's absence was a
major factor. I do think the acoustics could have been better, and to a certain
degree the lightshow was lacking.

For my money,  the highlights were "Requiem," "Primitive," "LLB," "ESS," and
"Bloodsport." All things being equal, there was no other place on earth that I
would have rather been than the Wiltern on Saturday night.  It was an honor to
see the final show.

And I've seen others praise Big Paul, and you are not kidding: He was simply
incredible. (Sade1 summed up his performance quite nicely.) KJ needed him back,
big time. Of course, Geordie, Jaz and the bass tech (whose name I didn't hear --
anybody know it?) were all in fine form. The "Happy Birthday" was a lovely
moment, too.

Let us hope the band continues to progress from here, whatever obstacles occur.
(Yes, that was little old me who shouted out, "BIG PAUL!" when he took the
stage. Could not help it.)

My biggest regret -- other than not seeing Youth -- was not being able to meet
many of you fellow Gatherers. Perhaps there will be another time.

Cheers,

Karen

Best rundown for a great GREAT show, Mr. TB. tnx.

That first band (Melungeons?) sounded to me like Love&Rockets around "Hot Trip
To Heaven" time or maybe some deep Will
Sergeant/Echo.. grooves. Too bad I only heard their last 2 songs. I love
african/tropical/etc.
percussionw/electronicaverymuchthankyouguys.

About the drums not sounding so well, well, I was up in the balcony and it
sounded mighty fine from up there. (to the sound techs on
here: does sound travel differently
up&away from the ground-level troops in the pit?)
Big Paul stole the fucking show, rode it out like a bucking mastodon bull into
the street and back into the venue to the thrill of
everyone. He made the show what it was. I was overwhelmingly pleased by the
whole damn night! It also was my physical therapy since
currently I am physically tense from trying to get through a rotator cuff injury
and recent heavy work-outs, so the show really
helped me release the tension (drunk as I was) even while I may have bothered
others by constantly raising and rotating my shoulder,
maybe blocking their view. Sorry all (but it felt GOOD!).

Thank you guys!! Tight show, the songs all flowed into and out of each other
beautifully, very no-nonsense, very
youthful (considering they're all, what, 50?), great GREAT fucking show!!! My
only complaint is they didn't play twice as long.

++++++++++++

Yeah, sound in that place can vary depending on where you are.  The sweet spot
is really about dead center between the stage and the
bars on the floor.  The pit is good for sound if the band has loud amps and
stage monitors.  Back near the bars, you get more of the
highs for some reason.  Because the house PA is suspended up fairly high the
front section of the balcony gets a pretty strong,
punchy sound but further back up there, it gets pretty bass-heavy and muddy.
Compared to a similar sized place like the Hollywood
Palladium which is boomy and has a unimpressive PA, I'll take the Wiltern any
day over any other similar sized LA venue for sound.

T.B.
