[kj] OT: The Damned

Both the Buzzcocks and SLF produced loads of great songs, but I don't think they've displayed the breadth of talent that the Damned have.  Admittedly, I haven't listened to either of them exhaustively, so maybe I've missed the fantastic variety somewhere...

However, if I had to choose (now) between seeing the Damned, the Buzzcocks, and SLF, it would be the latter every time.

I know I'm in the minority, but from what little I've heard from the Damned (but have seen them twice--early 80s and about 10 years ago) they always
seemed to be weak on the song writing (and from what I remember of Lords they were weaker still).  I wouldn't rank them up there w/songwriting geniouses
like Buzzcocks and SLF (Jake Burns), who've had amazing careers (the only weak albums I've heard by either is the yellow Buzzcocks one from the 90s -All Set, i think--and
the other yellow one from SLF (Jump Street, i think).

Dude. (Yes, I am an American, so I can say that.)

Bryan James or not, pretty much everything The Damned did until 1982 is flawless. Flawless. This includes 1978's _Music for Pleasure_, as far as I am concerned, as well as, yes, their near-perfect, post-Bryan James masterpiece, _Machingeun Etiquette_, probably their greatest overall LP. (I first heard MG on cassette with the "Lemmy on bass" 'bonus tracks' put on, but they were  NOT as listed bonus tracks, so that always made me think Lemmy had been in The Damned briefly!)

Whether Bryan James was in the mix or not, I think The Damned were pretty much flawless up until _Strawberries_. Especially when you consider the time period/musical historica context/sociological blah blah blah, etc. :)
