It was a true story, or
at least, it distorted one, http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html

For everyone who was practically raised on Sound Of Music once per year (raises hand) you may conned by the truth:

"The family did not secretly escape over the Alps to freedom... daughter Maria
said..."we left by train, pretending nothing.' "
"[Fraulein] Maria wasn't always as sweet as the fictional Maria. She tended to erupt in angry outbursts consisting of yelling, throwing things, and slamming doors. "

And there is a Commie/Socialeftist angle too:
"[Fraulein] Maria.. was raised as an atheist and socialist..."

They're everywhere now.

... ... ... ... ... ...

[looking at the current state of things..]

'Who has the fun..
..is it always a man with a gun...?
Someone must have told him if you work too hard... you can sweat"

That's another 'classic' film I really don't get.

Amusing anecdote: I can't recall the name, but there's a Japanese film director who was one of the first filmmakers, having began his career in the 1920s with several silent movies. Like a few (and only a few!) other filmmakers, he wasn't happy when sound came along, believing that silent film was the pinnacle of cinematic expression. When sound took over, he left the profession. Since the 1930s he had only watched one film. He couldn't remember what the title was, only that it involved a woman and lots of kids singing on a mountain somewhere.
