Both Silent Running and Blade Runner are indeed better than 2001. As are Metropolis and Solaris (decent remake too), although my own preferences veer more towards horror(and yes, The Shining is also bollocks).

Douglas Trumbull directed Huey, Dewey and Louie in Silent Running, and did the screen effects for Blade Runner and....2001.
