DEPTH CHARGE KJ13
Category: Music
DEPTH-CHARGE
The tape opp's are drawing straws as to who gets the KJ session ! Almost two
weeks in and i keep stumbling across the comatose bodies of various
engineers and their assistants collapsed in huddles in hidden crooks and
crannies of the studio, which has taken on the ambience of a german U-boat
stuck on the bottom of the North Sea whilst invisible enemies try to depth
charge us from above.
Geordie has seven mikes and seven guitar tracks for each of his guitar
takes........! All of which add to the wall of hiss and crunch of his ADT
and reverb pedals through his mighty Framus amps. One of my personal
missions on this album has been to encourage him away from his trademark
gold, semi acoustic, ADT et al and back to a solid body Gibson SG and Les
Paul , sans pedals and in glorious mono.
This has been partially successful.... but he does gravitate back to type
and its a struggle to reel him back to mono at all. His hearing is so acute
if only one of his seven microphones is missing he notices and begins his
intimidating Michael Caine routine on whichever hapless engineer is to hand,
usually beginning with "What the Fucking hell is going on with my guitar
sound?" followed swiftly with a dismissive "Do I look like like I give a
fuck ! "
Both Geordie and Jaz are almost impossible to produce or even direct ....as
they are so entrenched with their usual way of working (glacial) combined
with a philosophy of intimidation and brute force of will....however we are
making progress and Jaz is on full throttle warp spasm mode. There are some
tracks that defy description and the music is unlike anything i've ever
heard before....a very good thing!
When the music locks in it has a really physical effect on my body ...every
cell resonates and i come away with a feeling of renewal and elevation,
despite feeling like i've just been run down by a juggernaut or as Paul puts
it "Head butting a wall!
Most of the times we've been flying along ,I feel like i've been training my
team of engineers for ten years just so they will be able to cope with this
one session !
Occasionally we get into a big fight over a trivial matter.... usually the
click track ! This is where we fall unavoidably into Trogg's, Spinal Tap and
Anvil territory....Geordie shrieking drum sounds with intense frustration
like "Budda Badda Bup" really loud into the the programmers blank face to
communicate his cowbell idea.. whilst Big Paul throws his drumsticks down
and stomps out from behind his drum kit. At other times two of us will
square up to each other with guitars, microphones or anything else at hand
and lock horns like angry stags, whilst the engineers are ducking under the
desk we suddenly explode in a cacophony of belly laughs! Both myself and Jaz
had a Barbara Streisand Prima Donna rant today which sent various artists
and producers running for the exit from the communal canteen area nervously
avoiding eye contact.
Huge egos and lots of low self esteem combine to create the most dynamic of
atmospheres.Other choice moments ......Jaz..... "You spineless cunt " to a
senior technician for no apparent reason or earlier Big Paul instructing an
assistant who had been grabbing a brief break
" You..! Do your fucking job you cunt, make me sound like God ! " Jaz's
favourite catchphrase seems to be "It's ether in or its fucking out !
In its essence and heart she is a very dangerous lady, yet irresistibly
contageous and super addictive...Its movie like and very surreal at times
but you couldn't make it up! You can usually hear my sighs or long groans
down the corridor, as 25 years of production experience in patience is being
stretched to the max! Or Jaz's fervour echoing through the doors, Messianic
preaching, to whoever will listen about his plans to start a new religion
with himself as pope!
On the plus side Michael , my new assistant, has seen his computer skills
triple in the last week!
We are all feeling the pace but we know each other so well we have a psychic
response and so can whip an arrangement together very fast, so far we have
got most of the tracks within 3 to 4 takes !
We have also been honoured and inspired by John Hinkleton, the legendary
Judge Dread artist, who has been hanging out in the studio painting and
drawing while we work....a fantastic synergy for creativity and something I
would like to explore further in the future. He has signed up for Dignitas
(assisted suicide) in Switzerland, as he's been long sufffering from MS...He
says the music helps him ...better than any drug.We are celebrating because
he has had to delay his date with death three times because of the band, and
once more again today as Jaz has made him promise to come to the London show
in April to do his makeup!
Although we have cocooned ourselves off... some old friends have penetrated
the inner circle and blessed us with even more inspiration... Jeff, AKA
..the Baba of Brixton, who mentored us when we used to squat together in
Labroke Grove and Jah Chester, another old cohort and brother in arms.
Swapping story's and re awakening long forgotten emotions.
All in all the band has consumed us like a burning bush fire ,squeezing
every last drop of blood our souls have to offer.
It has been a privilege!
