Just because he's sitting doesn't mean he's going direct.  The amp is in 
the other room, cranked up and well-mic'ed, I'm sure. He's sitting in 
the control room so he can hear his performance in relative mix to the 
other instruments coming thru the speakers.  Pretty much only vocalists 
and drummers have to be physically in the isolation room to do their 
thing.  Everybody else does it in the control room.  Very standard practice.
