[kj] OT: I want one

The beastie falling over totally cracked me up, but it's eerie in a way
too because, to me, it highlights how mechanical we actually are. I think
we're in for a lot more eerieness over time as we create machines that
replicate the bodies and minds of living things. Some people find it
offensive I'm sure. Playing g0d! Gasp.

Powerful artificial intelligence isn't far away, 2020 - 2030 is when
desktop PCs are calculated to have the same processing power as the human
mind. They are currently operating at less than the power of rodents I
think, but the processing power available to AI research has ballooned in
the last 10-15 years and is rising exponentially. So very shortly after
PCs attain our level of horsepoewr, they will surpass us. (Or a
combination of human / machine intelligence will). And there's every
chance that with quantum computing, that exponential rise will be
accellerated hugely.

Anyone venturing an opinion about the feasibility of AI matching the human
mind, in the negative, has been premature and probably misunderstood the
processing power equation. There's no chance of human-like intelligence
when you're limited to hardware as powerful as an insect's brain, let
alone the software problems. Both of which are being worked on and great
progress made.

Given the chance, machines will one day, quite possibly within our
lifetimes, far surpass us mentally. I'm looking forward to it, I still
haven't beaten fucking Rubicks cube.
