[kj] Eddy Current Suppression Ring

Hey, no worries -- we *all* went through that phase. And when it comes to Lou Reed, squealing is aloud, always. ; )

I went through an ultra-serious chin-stroking pseudo phase in my teens, and I remember listening to "Metal Machine Music" with a group of equally pretentious friends and having a terribly serious discussion about its profound significance.

I have it on vinyl and CD, and listen to it from time to time. I find it like WD40 for my brain, and I absolutely see the funny side. Contractual fulfilment albums don't come more bloody minded than this one. I also like E. Neubauten's "Das Schaben" too.

But then I love Lou Reed, permed mullet or not. "Berlin" is one of my top 10 albums (so you can imagine my childish squealing when I saw him do it live recently).

I remember a Twilight Zone episode (I think it was) where a dude walks around a corner and catches a bunch of leprechauns or something, putting together the world, brick by brick, behind which is just grey nothingness. I.e. some form of the Matrix. (Okay coulda been a short story.very hazy.)

Anyway, this sounds to me like the music the little fuckers would listen to as they are building whatever scene you're about to walk into.

Darren, what YOU are is unspeakable. But anyway, yeah I do that - mix up labels & comparisons,
anything to get the point across, basically.

Here, see if you can figuure out what band/album I'm describing here: "Imagine being chucked head-first
into a wood chipper". Pretty obvious really - you'll kick yourself.

But in that case I'd rather say who they're similar to, as it gives the person I'm talking to a better "in". If someone's not into Sunn O))), describing them as Doom Drone will be meaningless. If I say that they're like Bloody Panda, they'll ... not have heard them either. Oh.

Play stuff to people. That's the answer. You get a personal investment in selecting things you'll think people might like. Mixtapes. It allows the people to not restrict themselves to the faction they're in danger of aligning themselves with.

See - I like (say) Regina Spektor. I also like (say) Killing Joke and (say) Ultravox and (say) Depeche Mode. What category do I fit into? Am I a new-romantic-synth-pop-female-singer-songwriter-industrial-goth-post-punkerist? Or am I me?

Labels are a weird one 'cos I hate that categorisation & yet use them when I need to

communicate my thoughts of a tune/band to someone else. A Necessary Evil.

As Clive once said, "If only they'd facking label things."

Fair do's, Pete. I laughed.

Sometimes it's easy to disappear up your own arse trying to classify music, which is why I think mostly you shouldn't (apart from the good / crap thing).

In Oliver's defence, however, I think it's slightly different when you need to program a radio show with genre-based music.

Oliver: Are these a Doom drone band, or are they perhaps a New Doom Drone Band ?

Are they a Metal Doom Drone band or a Death Metal Doom Drone band ?

Are they an Old school Doom Drone band or are they a New wave of Doom Drone band or maybe they are even a New wave of Death Metal Doom Drone band .

If they are a New Wave of Old Skool Death Metal Doom Drone band revivalists and therefore that makes them in a new category, then I may give them a listen , but if they are New Wave of Old Skool Death Metal Doom Drone band non revivalist , then I wont bother because that is so *last year *
