[kj] [OT] Sunday morning reading. Music = intelligence?

When i first wrote Metallica over Nirvana I should've said early Metallica.
All I'll listen to of theirs is only up until the Black album. After "Load" I forgot
about them.

Yeah I can see where you’re coming from…bear in mind I love early Metallica, moreso than most other 80s metal (inc Iron Maiden). I just don’t like what they’ve become.

I disagree that early Metallica are better than early Nirvana tho, but that’s down to taste etc.

Happy dreams of Lars J

Damn internet. Okay, I'll say it a little more clearly. If Metallica had ceased to exist as a band in September of 1986 (which is when Cliff Burton died), then they would poop all over Nirvana.

If their entire recorded studio output consisted solely of Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets with no Black Album or Load or St. Anger or even half-baked Justice For All to sully their good name.....in other words, if they were wiped off the face of the planet at their very creative apex, never to return again....then it's Metallica FTW.

There’s PLENTY of room for debate.

One:     St Anger (“FLUSH IT OUT!”)
Two:     Lars Ulrich
Three:   Fuck all decent material post running out of Dave Mustaine tracks
Four:    Ulrich and Hammet dancing along to Limp Bizkit covering Sanitarium live
Five:     Awful live performance with symphony orchestra
Six:      Nirvana were the biggest band in the world, for a time, *before* Kurt died.
Seven:  David Bowie and John Lydon praised Nirvana
Eight:   Hetfield is a 5/10 singer at best, and a redneck goober to boot (promoting guns now after singing ‘One’ back in the day…)
Nine:     Insanely embarrassing documentary about how pissy they are as individuals
Ten:      Bass player replacement dude going on Rent-a-Hutchence reality show
Eleven: Becoming the poster-band for selling out in a prolonged, incredibly embarrassing way…

PS: Is it just me or that bit in Enter Sandman, where he goes “Dreams of war, dreams of liars”…doesn’t it sound like “Dreams of Lars”? LOL

If Metallica had all died in the bus accident along with Cliff Burton then they would take it by a country mile. And there would not be any room whatsoever for debate.

Nirvana vs Metallica

Vocals:             Nirvana, easily
Guitarist(s):       Metallica by a long shot
Drummer:          Nirvana
Bass player:      Who cares ;)
Lyrics:              Nirvana by a long shot
Song-writing:     Nirvana – broader and deeper range

I find in favour of Nirvana…

Hm, Nirvana to the right of Metallica... hip-hop smarter than Gospel? And is
Killing Joke literally "off the charts"?

(Wot, no Coldplay?)

Meh, I think people listen to music in a much more holistic and
experiential way, anyway, but graph sure is fun to look at and joke about. *cues ska playlist*

In no way do I wholly agree with this but nevertheless it's an errrrr....
interesting idea/read

Ps. I apologize to my fellow Brits about the 25 DVD box set gift.

Pps. Whoever mentioned the "House of Yes" movie in a previous thread. Thank you!
Parker Posey is awesome (also enjoyed her in "Best in Show").
