It's a bloody good point - I've always thought you could see where music was at by following their changes in style. One thing that lifts them up from that is that they're always Killing Joke, it permeates their output, but nevertheless...

You could make a case that Killing Joke are trend-surfers, despite the
profusely professed independent streak (hard to think of any band that's
trumpeted that angle more, except perhaps anything with Lydon in it). I
think their most unique sound was in the early days, and Pandemonium with
the incoropration of middle-eastern and orchestral elements (not that the
Beatles hadn't done similar, but KJ did it so authentically and skillfully
with Coleman at the helm). Mid-80s on saw an increasing trend towards pop
and mainstream acceptance, drastically so with OTG, EPIC FAILURE to do so
as well. Mid 90s on saw the chugga chugga trend that a lot have pointed
out, coincidental with the huge popularity of that style of music from the
late 80s / early 90s on.
