I think the whole concept of 7 Year Itch was the back-to-basics
approach. Witness the fact that she didn't augment the line-up with a
keyboard player, a percussionist, a second guitarist, etc. It was just
a four-piece with her out front, just like in the (very) old days.
That she sang flat or out of tune wasn't so much by design, but rather
just the "warts n' all" delivery."

For what it's worth, I saw her on that tour and it was as dreadful a
performance as the one captured on the disc.
