Brendan: You make some good points about China's economy, especially given the lack of any safety net. Perhaps that also included the appallingly low wages paid there. That's one primary reason China is so much more competitive. Another factor is the lack of any regulation like there is in the U.S. or other economically advanced nations.
But you are right: For now, this is definitely the Asian Century. It will be very interesting -- and I hope not too painful for both humanity and the environment -- to see how it plays out.

You're right about the Chinese.deal with them is, they are hugely more competitive than the US because they have no or extremely little social welfare. So in hard times, there isn't that overhead of having to cater to people who are out of jobs (apparently the figure in China at the moment is 30 million.). Western economies can't compete. India has the same 'advantage'. Hence we're seeing net wealth flow from west back to east now. The balance of power is changing.

If you don't think the Chinese are CAPITALISTS I have some fantasic swamp land i'd like to sell you! (I was in Vietnam last year and it was the most capitalist place I've ever been). What I meant in my 1st post was that if all energy is green (solar, wind, etc.) then the environment will start to get cleaned up. And right now the capitalists (including those in Chian, Brazil, Russia) are the ones who produce and control most of the energy in the world (w/the exception of people who live in the woods and have a wood-burning stove, etc), so for now it has to start w/them.

Yes, but.. Just capitalists?? As opposed to who (that also fits the above description)?
I used to have 2 dogs as a kid who for a while used to fight like animals and rip each
other up and leave the backyard or porch a total utter mess. And it was always the same
one who started the fight. So - we (me and 3 sibs) erroneously thought - we'll do anything
to stop (just) the "dog provocateur," aka the 1st dog -- and the 2nd dog 1) totally ripped into
the 1st dog anyway, and 2) still made a total fucken' mess of the yard, anyway.
So, stopping just the capitalists will further allow and empower, say, the Chinese to continue
their "full-spectrum" assault on Mother Earth, or the Brazilian deforrestation of the Amazon,
or the future possible underwater mining/drilling/toxic-dumping into the Arctic/polar basin by
the Russians, U.S. and/or others...

The main way to affect climate change is not the bullshit we hear in the media about everyone turning off a light, but by forcing the capitalists (who care nothing about the planet, only about making immediate short-term profits) to abandon their oil, gas, and coal industries and switch to solar, wind, etc. And since that it not immediately profitable for them to do this, the only way to get this done is through revolutions!
