i may have only 2 weeks stay in L A so i agree saul that i will see only a little of the city 

the club i mentioned is called gabah and is on melrose ave in mid wilshire which the guide reckons is a dodgy area 

anyway thanks for links 

i must admit this is all a logistical nightmare

Venice isn't bad for base-camp, but that leads to your previous question, 
"how can i see all of L.A.?"  Ya can't, not in a brief stay; the better thing 
to do is pick an area (or 2, but closer together) and you'll enjoy your stay 
more (Venice to East L.A. can be up to 3hrs. away with enough traffic, and 
has happened to me more than once). Commuting in L.A. traffic can tie 
up up to several precious hours of your time - not a good idea. 
 
If Venice is your base, Santa Monica and West L.A. are good nearby areas 
you can go to. 
If you want clubs and 'the scene' you might consider West Hollywood, 
Bev.Hills, Hollywood, the Fairfax District, Miracle Mile (along Wilshire from 
Highland to Beverly Hills), Mid-Wilshire, even Los Feliz (further east) is 
better located for lots of the nightlife, but then again, there is some nightlife 
everywhere. 
The Beach Cities (Venice, Sta.Mo., etc.) have their own little world of nightlife 
that I'm not too familiar with and not for several years, so you're better off 
looking  it up yourself.

  By who?
 
Wilshire Bl. west from Western Ave. and on into Westwood and beyond, you'll be fine on foot, no worries (Mr. Folk Devil and his "Kalashnikov" may have something to do with that). East from Western Ave. (mostly but not only "from dusk til dawn") it's a very different story, especially up any of the sidestreets. 
 
Alot of the Wilshire Bl. crime happens from Western Ave. and EAST, through MacArthur Park and all the way into the downtown area.

thanks for tip 
a mule trek was considered but i don't know how i would manage my luggage so i'm taking a raincheck and sticking with the comfortable option 
even considered a helicopter flight 
have to decide when i get nearer to it 
L A looks daunting just by the shear size of it 
learnt to avoid wilshire district 
pity sounds like a great club there

Don't go to the GC from late November/early December..unless you are really a hardcore hiker. Much of it will possibly be closed to the public , too.

Fuck me, Stephen. You’re a cheery fellow today.
 
But I agree with you. Life’s too precious to waste. Tomorrow, for example, I shall be scaling the Polish Line of K2, followed by all igator wrestling in Florida. Friday I’m unicycling to the Meteora monastery, and then circumnavigating Sicily by pedalo.
 
Saturday and Sunday I think I’ll have a bit of a rest, as next week is quite busy.
