God, if no virtuoso could be musically bankrupt we'd all be raving about Dream Theater.

By musically bankrupt, I mean specifically that they have nothing inspirational to impart through their music. I regard Clapton, Knopfler, vai, Malmsteen &c. as having nothing to offer me. However, there are virtuosi who do; Fripp, Belew, Gill, Geordie and McGeogh spring immediately to mind.

In my view, being a consummate musician signifies precisely nothing other than you practice a lot. It's what you choose to do with your skills that counts.

Widdly fret-wankery doesn't impress me much, hence the fact that the only Eddie Van Halen guitar I possess is on a Thomas Dolby album.

Steely Dan are many things, but muscially bankrupt? No way. I'd rather listen to badgers bugger each other, but Steely Dan are nothing if not consummate musicians. Boring, but certainly accomplished.

But there's so much other "music" that fits into the bankrupt category--ALL recent mainstream country, most 80s "new wave" top 40/New Romantic crap, 90s "alternative", ALL 70s arena rock, etc. etc. The yatch rock bands mentioned below only scratch the surface...
P.S. Pet peeve--so much "music" today is entirely electronically produced--even ethnic stuff like Afro Pop, reggae and Punjabi banghra music no longer uses musicians playing instruments, it's just programmed. MJ was probably one of the first to start this horrible trend--just listen to the awful electronic bass line that opens "Thriller". Don't get me wrong--synthesizers can be a real instrument, when used to sound like synths--a la Kraftwork, Devo, Cab Voltaire, etc. But when musicians are replaced by electronics just to save $ or for convenience, it not only is wrong but fucks up the whole feeling of music. One minor positive development--some rap groups have begun to use live backup bands instead of just samples and programming. But as a whole actual musicians are being replaced more and more by machines (starting to sound like an Isaac Asimov story)...

Yacht rock bands. Chicago are clearly monstrous, but I’d add Toto, the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Air Supply et al.

Musically, spiritually and emotionally bankrupt, the lot of them. Fie.

I would disagree.
Both KJ and MJ are influenced by dance music
Both KJ and MJ focus on environmental issues in their lyrics
Both KJ and MJ (sometimes) have grinding guitars (Slash has played with MJ)
Kiss/Rush are moreso of Killing jokes antitheses, moreso then MJ is .

I agree.

Among the gazillion of bands that are antithetical to KJ, I'd also add Chicago and their abuse of Bauhaus t-shirts:
