Sounds like distortion . . I always got good results with a Marshall
Guvnor pedal (as long as you can tame the feedback)

 

Antares Avox was rather good and had tube emulation, it is probably
still available somewhere on the net (here for example

)

 

Otherwise, try running the vocals through something like Amplitube or
Guitar Rig, that should give some interesting effects (and a lot of
noise!)
