[kj] rebellion?

The good thing is that the restoration of Dresden did respect the original pattern. Hopefully, the city will not be considered a playground, with tons of fast food chains rooting to compete for winning the best spot next to a monument.

I spent time in Dresden, too, as part of a study
group. It is indeed a glorious place.?Every time I've been in Europe, I'm
always awe-struck by nearly all of the historic architecture.

I saw Leipzig in 2001 and
Dresden in 2002. Let me tell you, apart from those horrid buildings built
during the regime, the historical architecture is splendid. Most of the
historical buildings in downtown Dresden were still being restored, and
wrapped in scaffolding and tarps. Next to them one could see images of how
they looked like before being bombed. Dresden is, undoubtedly, the most
beautiful city in eastern Germany, let me tell you that. It is know as "The
Florence on the Elbe River" (but I wished I could have seen the cathedral in
Magdeburg as well).

Point taken -- and given the town I'm from, I know all
about that. For any city to know where it's going, some structures from the
past should remain. So, while the architecture wasn't "pretty," I certainly
can respect its historical perspective.

Yes, but you don't bury history.

?It definitely seemed as if city leaders and
developers were in a big hurry to erase the past.

Given how hideous most of the drab, communist-era
architecture was, I couldn't blame them, really.
