[kj] [OT] King Crimson 5.1

Actually, I would say that 5.1 is less "fashionable" than it was a few years ago, when surround sound was emerging and record companies were releasing quite a bit of titles, especially during the Christmas retail season.    For the moment, it hasn't generated a huge groundswell of commercial success, and  has evolved into much more of a niche market phenomenon that music diehards are keeping alive.   Not completely unlike the classical music cd market,   i.e.  much smaller but consistent sales numbers when compared to rock record sales.5.1 has also renewed interest in all the quadraphonic sound releases that came out in the 70's, as there are  now computer programs that allow people to convert quad sources to files that can be uploaded to the internet and then downloaded and burned to disc on the other end.

I for one love  5.1 , and look forward to hearing this stuff ,  especially "Red" when it comes out.    For those of you who haven't experienced the 'Gathering XXV" dvd through a good system with the 5.1 mix going,  it is well worth checking out .   Really makes you feel like you were there.       - Carl P.

This 5.1 business is becoming quite fashionable.

Many electronic musicians have been doing this for a while, now. P
ete Namlook, Richard Devine to name a couple...
