Folks don't have a clue anymore, and this applies to any music scene, trust me.

As with everything time dillutes the original message.
Back in the 80s Detroit hardcore scene you could bet your teeth that if you saw a skinhead with white laces that they were racist. Nowadays you see Hot Topic "punkers" with Docs and white laces sporting a Clash t-shirt. So now unless there is something blatant, subtle clothing does not mark them as "the enemy". The racist skins tend to be a bit more subtle/ashamed/hiding/whatever about it nowadays. At least in these parts.
