[kj] KJ Covers Album?

Way back in the dark post-democracy days when we wondered if another KJ album would ever appear, I did knock up and circulate around the Gathering a compilation of KJ covers, from Metallica's 'The Wait' to Sarah McLachlan's not-bad 'Love Like Blood'. It wasn't great, but it gave me something else to listen to while we waited for the real thing!

End result of this thread, in my opinion, is that no one could really cover Killing Joke and do them justice, like a bunch of other bands that'll never see decent covers.

I'm no fan of tribute albums personally but I'm not about to lose sleep if modern, popular bands perform a bunch of Killing Joke tunes. After all- and this is the genius part here- if it's crap I don't actually have to buy it. Which is the way it should be.

Besides, there really is bugger all at stake here. If a Lamb of God/Metallica/etc etc covers album comes out, one of two things will happen. Either it'll be shit and nobody will buy it (which will have no impact on the Joke whatsoever, except possibly financially) or some kids buy it and discover a new band. They then buy some Joke albums. Which is great. The reputation of the Joke is unlikely to be affected in the slightest. Besides, as long as copies of Outside The Gate and Democracy remain on the shelves of record stores worldwide, there's nothing to fear from a tribute album.

As to the question of pandering to a younger audience, frankly, who cares? There's more than enough Joke product out there that is aimed squarely at the devoted fan, the long-time follower, the avid collector. If a bunch of kids want to start paying Killing Joke the respect they've long deserved, I'm not going to moan.

"I'd rather hear Grace Jones do Turn To Red"
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, I would be buying that album, I would be advance ordering it if this was the case.  Metallica and Lamb of God, get outta here.  KJ's base of fans can be broadened much more if legends that were not meant to give solace only to 15 year old boys (not that there is anything wrong with that, lots of great rawk started out that way) like Grace Jones would do a track.  Expand, do not consolidate just yet guys.  I really wish they had a manager who would say this?????

The great thing about KJ is what Folkie is sayin here, I mean, Killing Joke bleeds into EVERY genre.
Hell yeah I love their "rawkin stuff" during certain times, but their musical content is alot more solid than the slavish bands that will cover them.  Damn, the possibilities for a great KJ cover album really are endless.

To be filed under rock and cock cheese, then...
I have (up until lately) found KJ to be independent of genrefication. If they are really going chugga chugga, gwar...oh dear...

I suspect that the reason kj are considering this idea is the same reason they are playing all the rawk festivals this summer – to raise their profile, garner some new fans and make a bit of dosh in the process. I cant see fans of the Pet Shop Boys or Sinaed O’fuckingConnor rushing out in their droves to buy the killing joke back catalogue on the strength of hearing a cover of Millennium. With people like Metallica & Lamb of God doing the covers, the potential for their fans choosing to seek out more kj material is far greater. If this raises their profile, then it has to be a good thing. I still wouldn’t bother buying it though.

I agree that nothing is gained by "near-original" versions.  I'd rather listen to, say, Pet Shop Boys, doing a take on MIlennium rather than any metal outfit copycating (they won't beat the original)...

How about Transglobal Underground doing Nervous System, with Natasha Atlas on vocals?

A strong female vocalist would work well with Night Time & Brighter Than A Thousand Suns material... e.g. Sinead singing Sanity or Twilight of the Mortal.

And U2 could cover Love Like Blood. <grin>

If I was absolutely forced to recommend artists to cover KJ, I don't want to hear
any more metal/industrial/rock bands do KJ-lite versions.
I'd rather hear Grace Jones do Turn To Red, or something (remember her version
of Joy division's She's Lost Control? Superb). What I don't want to hear is Lamb of
frickin God turning one of Geordie's masterly riffs into a sub-thrash dirge while someone
grunts over the top...

I ould like to see Ministry, Skinny Puppy, and Godflesh or Jesu cover Killing Joke tracks.

Can anyone add more to the list of people who've covered Killing Joke songs?
I make it:
Metallica (The Wait)
Mad Capsule Markets (Wardance)
Helmet (Primitive)
Foo Fighters (Requiem)
Nouvelle Vague (Pssyche)
Fear Factory (jeez...) (Millennium)

eeeeerm

Have I left out loads? Not really an album's worth, is it?

I certainly hope it is NOT Killing Joke doing covers.  One band paying "homage" to their favorite artists that "inspired them" reek of contractual obligations and writers block AND laziness.

I would assume it is other bands doing KJ covers; to be paid with the wads being thrown at them by universal. Typical PR stunt, to 'broaden' their listenership. Let's hope the monies are non-recoupable..

I have to say, this is a poorly worded item. Is the album to be a compilation of bands covering KJ tunes? Or is it KJ covering other bands? Seems awfully dubious.
