Hi all, excuse the delay in the answer but i was out for vacation at beautiful Playa del Carmen beach (near Cancun).
My surprise was big when i returned last weekend and saw all these alarms about the flu issue. Things here are pretty alarming: A lot of small bussineses are closed, there are no classes at any school (any at all, from kinder garden to university), a lot of people is not going to their office to work, they better work from home (not my case, i work at a big editorial company and we have mags to finish, but some colaborators are working from their home); and about 80% of the people is wearing this clothe-masks to cover nose and mouth (right now almost all this cloth-masks were sold out in Mexico city! Luckily the government is giving away these in the streets).

It's an important issue, no doubt at all, there have been around 1,300 people infected and between those, 130 sadly have died... but we are about 18 million people living in this huge city, so, thinking with a cold head, the percentage isn't that alarming. Anyway, we can't be very confident, we can't take things for granted, and fortunately it seems that the government actions are having good results. Because let me tell you this is a crowded city, but right now there's about 50% of the people out in the streets walking. The vehicle traffic is also very less crowded that in regular days.

The people have died basically because all the sympthoms are very similar to a common-aggressive flu and usually almost nobody go to the Doctor because you got a flu. It's most common that you buy some commercial medicine at a drugstore to attack the virus. The thing here is that many people did so without any result at all and days later they went to the doctors and hospitals until they were almost dying (in this modern times nobody think that is going to die of flu!!).

The sanitary and government authorities think about this week as crucial to stop the virus. I also think so. The students are returning to school -in theory- on May 6, and everybody thinks so, we all hope by that date almost everything goes normal again. But there also the ones that think that the alarm is going to extend to the whole next week. It's ok because of this sanitary issue, but the other alarming thing is that the local economy is already suffering all this inactivity, another week equal is going to be a though punch to this very unhealthy mexican economy...

...But what the hell!, right now i can think only in what granma used to say: "Money and all the material stuff come and go, at the end you can loose everything but your health".

Thanks for caring Matthew, Bongo; In my case all the family is ok, my twin girls are right now with my mom (the caring school/center where they usually go is also closed this days) and my big son is also pretty ok with his mom. My mother in law is in hospital after a surge, she got rid of a breast tumor cancer yesterday (luckily everything went just fine) and if all these were not enough yesterday morning we had an 5.7 (Richter) earthquake: nobody harmed either!

Right now I'm almost waiting the time for a dog to pee on me... i won't be surprised.

Cheers!

Javier
Very healthy in Mexico City

"The World Bank estimated in 2008 that a flu pandemic could cost $3 trillion and result in a nearly 5 percent drop in world gross domestic product, damaging prospects of recovery in a world economy deep in financial crisis."

"Shares in Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG (ROG.VX) rose. The company said it was working on increasing production of Tamiflu, a drug shown to work against the new flu strain. But a company spokeswoman said the production lead time for the drug from synthesis of the product to packaging was eight months."

I've been just a lurker here lately, but I have been following the flu outbreak in Mexico City, as it has also now sprung up about a mile from my home in New York. Just had you and your family in mind as I've been piling over conflicting reports about how bad the situation is. Hope you are all well and staying away from crowds (in Mexico City?!?), and was just curious about what you're seeing going on on the ground down there. Sending thoughts and wishes your way.
