[kj] Depeche Mode / KJ pitched battle

Alex: I know KJ members are not scary, and have heard the lads are pretty cool, for the most part. I guess my comment was related to musical styles; just me being my usual, flippant self. But you make some very thoughtful points.

Ciao,

Much is made about how scary KJ are as individuals, but I've always found them to be pretty warm, approachable guys (well maybe not Geordie so much, but...). It doesn't surprise me at all that KJ were friendly with DM. For a start, this was pretty early in DM's career, all told (they hadn't yet morphed into stadium-fillers). Secondly, they were British boys out doing it for themselves just as KJ had done a few years earlier. What's not to support? Raven especially had lots of time for lots of people. Why shouldn't they be friendly with Depeche Mode?

Haha -- funny little story. I'm surprised that KJ would "pop" in to check on Depeche Mode. "Blasphemous Rumours" indeed.

Weird.

From the Depeche Mode “Some Great Reward” CD & DVD package booklet (they’re all cheap - £9 each - at HMV at the mo):

“Killing Joke were recording in another of Hansa’s studios while we were there and they would pop in to see how we were doing. One day we were mixing “Blasphemous Rumours” and because it has a very dark verse and a very catchy chorus, they had a massive argument between themselves as to whether that was the right approach to take with the track. It seemed to have a big effect on them.” (Daniel Miller)

Well, if it had anything to do with veering away from the “Me Or You?” direction, I suppose we should be grateful.
