There’s only one mandolin-playing person in my collection, and he is Mr. Nash The Slash, particularly in F.M., but solo too.

No, not that F.M. The Canadian prog group, with the singer who looks like Neil from the Young Ones.

Heh, I actually like that mandolin sound which i got into when i worked
in a music instrument shop and i'd play a mandolin often.
That and the occassional banjo in rock music.
And cowbell.

He also gave Mew the support slot on a few prestigious dates, so I have to acknowledge his worth in that respect, blue Adam & The Ants face-paint or not. Putative over-fraternal interest in Courtney Love or not.

Any interest I might have had in REM was murdered by a colleague in the record shop I worked in when “Chronic Town” came out. He played it so repeatedly that I clearly remember telling him that I would never ever ever like REM as a result, regardless of whatever works of shining genius they subsequently produced. I like to think I am a man of my word.

Also, as I get older, I prefer songs where I can make out the lyrics. And (I know this is later) “Losing My Religion” is one of my least favourite songs (and videos). Ever. I’d happily smack Buck about the head and shoulders with his bloody mandolin, were it not for the likelihood that he’d probably still be drunk from his flight and break my glasses.

They were great when they started out...."Shiny Happy People" isn't a song off the three albums I mentioned. I think when Michael Stipe cut those pretty locks, all the talent went with them.......but he did discover the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, so I still gotta give him props.

Really? Didn't get into "Murmur"? I think "Pilgrimage" is one of their best songs ever.

That whole 1st REM 5 song EP was sick and twisted. The only other record that comes close it "Reckoning".

Pete Buck (I am only speaking of early REM, like "Chronic Town", "Murmur" and "Reckoning") had such a distinctive style of guitar playing. Actually inspired me in so many ways. They were so great in their early years. Isn't Mike Mills the name of the bassist? Just listening to "Wolves, Lower" and am astounded by his playing.
Who was the bassist on "Learning to Crawl"? That had some tight bass lines, for sure.

I was also going to say John Paul Jones, Youth, and 'that guy from Siouxsie & and Bs.'
I'd just add Lee Dorman of Iron Butterfly, Geddy Lee (of Rush) of course, and the entire Reggae movement in general.
