Is there any proof or positive indication of him? Last I've read, no one, not even 
the Romans, left any records of him, even though there are actual contemporary 
records of his followers (Peter, Paul/Saul, John, etc.)

In my dealings, I have found those who make the claim to be Christian the most unforgiving narrow minded individuals who are unable to confront the massive contradictions in their lives.

There is no doubt that Jesus existed and he was a preacher, obviously a highly effective one. But I'm not quite sure he was who he claimed to be!

What concerns me is how his words have been read and are frequently totally ignored by his followers.

Now, Stephen, you seem like a decent chap from the dealings I have had with you off list, but I am alarmed that you might take a simple issue of someone's sexuality and claim it to be morally and spiritually wrong.
Would Jesus have taken such a line? His teachings are about forgiveness, understanding and acceptance. I mean, this guy hung out with hookers! I doubt very much if he would have been a homophobe if he trely was as good as his word. And let's not forget "his word" is just a collection of stories that were put together by people after the fact putting their spin on it. The bible has more than a tasty bit of editing! I mean, where were Jesus's teenage years?  That's for another time.............

Fact of the matter is that Christianity, like all the other religions I have come across is a blinkered, narrow minded and, at times, downright spiteful tool that has been used to control the masses for aeons.

I've an open mind about God. He might or might not exist. Dunno, doubt I ever will. But I'm pretty sure that he or she would be pretty pissed off with all the people running round the world doing things in his/her name!

The establishment of HIS kingdom over the population of the Earth is not the act of an omni-benevolent God is it? I was always told that God gave us free will and that we should use it and that would determine our fate. What you're saying is that God says "I'll let you do it your way but when it's not going how I like, I'll take me ball home". These sorts of contradictions make me want to run a mile from Christianity and Christians.

I will say that the CHristians have given us some fine architecture though, so they're not all THAT bad!
