[kj] (OT)Why haven't the Left got Georgia on their minds?

WAYYYY different circumstances and a way different political climate.

Again, this just reflects the lingering, weird old residue of Cold War
thinking that says Putin is basically Brezhnez, or something, and
whatever Russia does now is done in the name of Communist Imperialism.
The reflexively anti-Russian conservative base in the USA seems to
masochistically WANT to think that Russia is motivated by old Cold War
imperatives. That they might actually be protecting ethnic Russians a
mere 100 miles outside their own borders seems to be off the table, an
absurd idea. It's as if the old Cold War USSR had landed troops inside
England in the 1960s. That's way different than defending Ossetians from
a Georgian offensive.

It's amazing otherwise sensible people can't comprehend this, especially
when they have no opinion (it seems) on Poland agreeing to host US
missiles in their borders right beside Russia's border. Imagine Russia
made a deal with Canada to host missiles beside Michigan? The hue and
cry would be ceaseless in the US media. But Russia protecting ethnic
Russian folks 100 miles outside their own border? What bullies they
are!! How imperialistic! They must be castigated!

Give me a break.
