I have to agree with Alex about Wicker Man. i think it is scarier if yu
come from a Christian background, like The Omen. I have to admit when I
was young the original Wicker Man scared me, but I re-watched it about a
year ago and didn't find it so scary. In fact, some parts were
laugh-out-loud cheesy, like the naked girl banging on the wall as she
sings her "fertility song" or whatever. However, do recognize it's a
classic of its kind.

I am srprised no one mentioned Dario Argento's "Suspiria." As well, the
ORIGINAL, 1970s "Black Christmas" I thought was surprisingly scary. The
remake sucked, as they tend to do.

Als, nowadays there's this big gray area of movies that are disturbing,
but which are ot traditional horror films. Someone mentioned HENRY:
PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. In that vein you have a lot of what is
called the "New French Extremity" movement: IRREVERSIBLE and I STAND
ALONE -- bitter, sick, bleak-as-fuck movies that are chilling and
unnerving in a way that's different from, say THE SHINING, which I also
count among the creepiest movies of all time.

There is creepy and frightening in the sense of SALO: 120DAYS OF SODOM,
or in the vein of HILLS HAVE EYES. The latter is like Halloween season
scary; the former is a disturbing movie. There's so much Asian horror
now that it's als hard to keep track of, like the 3 EXTREMES set, etc.
