[kj] (OT) guitarists... Hum

Anyone know of the guys in Hum, if they're still doing anything? Kinda 'grungey',
verging on ..ballady(?), I used to like their guitars. Nothing groundbreaking i don't think,
just all-around fun to hear.
Too bad all the legacy (for any esoterically inclined to even spot it) they get is having their
music pilfered to serve Kate Walsh's hustling chick-cars in some Cadillac commercial. *grr'*

That sounds pretty interesting Leigh, would you be willing to share that stuff?

What about the guys of Hella? That's like a new way of playing guitar (and compose songs in general). Amazing stuff!

On the other hand, another quite original guitarist -maybe not very unconventional but still quite original- is Fredrik Thordendal from Meshuggah, his job with that band is good, but his solo album "Sol Niger Within" is outstanding (i don't like the vocals though, it's something like a witch singing, thankfully it's full of huge instrumental spaces). I love the way he plays with tempo in and those repetitive-mechanichal riffs, and imo his solos are very Fripp influenced they are very "progressive-rock" kind.
Meshuggah's "Catch Thirtythree" from 2005 is not that good, but still is a good example.

Speaking of unconventional guitarists - A certain CD came to mind. It's called Azonic Halo and features Andy Hawkins of Blind Idiot God doing lots of layering, looping and messing around with different effects and the whammy bar and whatnot. Some nice ambient backgrounds and Apocalypse Now samples as well. It came out on one of Bill Laswell's labels in the mid-90s. Sub Strata, maybe. Probably next to impossible to find a physical copy but well worth a download. Very cool stuff.

This is the geekiest thread in some time, thank you all. (Great to see Fripp fan gatherers.)

Moving in the direction of unconventional guitar . . .

Robin Guthrie has been mentioned enough, but I'll mention him again, and suggest you explore his solo work if you haven't, and also his collaborations with ambient legend Harold Budd.

For fans of the delay pedal, Lanterna, name for guitarist Henry Frayne, is an example of a genre called ambient-Americana. Great for driving in Autumn, if I may be so flakey. First album more ambient, and the two followups more "accessible". Surprised no tracks were ever grabbed for a car commercial.

And Jeff Pearce, in the ambient vein, though nakedly obvious he's playing a guitar, albeit drenched in layer upon layer of reverb.

Finally, I'll blow the whole thing up and mention my high school classic-rock geek hero Pete Townshend! Through who's fingers did run part of the roots of punk. (let the debate begin)
