On that topic, check out the origin of these sayings:

Not enough room to swing a cat:

Cat o' nine tails: nine pronged whip

A cat has nine lives:

Cat of nine tails, nine lives because it can keep whipping until all of
the strands are gone

You scratch my back I'll scratch yours:

Said by one prisoner / slave to another; they were often forced to whip
each other, so they would try to make an agreement with the whipper to go
easy because inevitably it would end up with the whippee being the
whipper.

I can drag out more whipping anecdotes if you're interested...my old man
is a historian and researched it a while back. I'm hoping to put the
research to good use ;p Actually there's some really horrible stories
about flogging back in the day, it was so bad in some cases that prisoners
asked to be sentenced to death rather than face the whip, because it could
be crippling and potentially fatal.
