WEST HOLLYWOOD The West Hollywood City Council Monday discussed the possibility of revoking or suspending the House of Blues' business license because of a series of violent incidents and management's failure to address them.

From September 2007 to September 2008, events at the House of Blues have led to 44 arrests, including for fights, drunken and disorderly behavior and grand theft, more than doubling the arrests for the same period in 2006 to 2007, according to Councilman John Heilman.

There have been more than 100 sheriff's radio dispatches in the past year to the club at 8430 Sunset Blvd.

"Unfortunately, for the last several years, the House of Blues has had a history of serious problems and an unwillingness to address these problems," said Heilman, who introduced the motion to begin proceedings to revoke or suspend the club's license.

"After each serious incident, there is a perfunctory apology and a promise to reform, but the problems persist and have escalated."

The club's general manager spoke at Monday's council meeting, pointing out the club's high revenues for the city and ability to draw some 300,000 visitors each year. But he did not address the history of problems that have occurred at the venue.

Heilman's fellow council members also expressed unhappiness at the meeting over the club's failure to fix the growing problems, which have caused distractions and inconvenience to residents and businesses nearby.

On Sept. 4, more than 100 people were involved in fights both inside and outside the club. Sheriff's deputies required assistance by officers from
the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments to keep crowds under control.

Authorities arrested several people that night on outstanding warrants, battery and drunkenness, and one woman was hospitalized.

Helicopter units monitored the area from above until 1 a.m. while a stretch of Sunset Boulevard remained closed for several hours.

Because of the closure, several nearby businesses lost customers and were not able to to return vehicles to their customers already at their establishments, Heilman said.
