Merle is 2nd best after George Jones. And Hank Jr. is a dope--I saw his son, Hank III, last year, and he did a decent set of Hank Sr.-influenced country rock, followed by a ridiculous 6 song set of ultra-bad death/thrash/dirt metal. My wife was cracking up at that point (she's from Vietnam, where by their musical standards Barry Manilow would be the equivalent of Corrosion of Conformity to us...)

No, you're thinking of Tammy Wynette (sort of the grandma of female country voices). I did have a chance to see Loretta Lynn recetnly and didn't --although I hear she' s pretty over the hill, but a few years ago did an album w/the White Stripes or something. Also, Emmylou Harris does quite a bit of stuff w/rockers (Elvis Costello, Jason, Steve Earle)...
