In no particular order...

Brendan Perry
Sinead Oconnor
Jaz Coleman
Louis Armstrong
Big Mama Thornton ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XUAg1_A7IE - if you like harmonica http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7DV2D8-4sA )
Louisa John-Krohl
Zohar Argov (dead)
Muddy Waters
Beth Orton
Lucinda Williams
Mike Scott (Waterboys)
Leonard Cohen
Peter Murphy
Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields, Lovage)
Johnny Cash
Cadaveria (Opera IX and Cadaveria)
Alison Shaw (Cranes)
Zucchero
Amr Diab

Many more to list (it'll never end), but here are the first few.

I don't know how to classify whose technically "the greatest" but all of these get into my
head real good.

I dunno- with the people who rate themselves as the best singer in the world- Maynard Keenan, Sebastian Bach, James Blunt, Courtney Love- that claim is so big it seems like a joke, with Keenan's the most obviously so. Keith Richards puts himself in at the end, so I suspect that's not entirely serious either.

The one that bothers me the most is Ozzy. Did he really sit down and work out that he is the sixth greatest singer in the world??? Aside from the practical arguments (Ozzy hasn't been even a good singer in decades), it's just too *precise*. It sounds like he might actually believe that, which is bloody scary.

Jim.

Heh, an online article from Rolling Stone that is actually worth
a look. They

have an online article showing some 24 ballots from various rock n'
roll

musicians picking their favorite top 20 singers. Of course,
there's some

bizarre picks, some ass-kissing and some massive egos (Maynard from
Tool shows

why he *is* a tool). James Hetfield from Metallica lists Jaz
among his favorite

singers:
